Alcohol extraction

Alana Rossi
August 19, 2023

Alcohol extraction utilizes ethanol alcohol to produce concentrated cannabis oil products and preparations. While several types of alcohol can technically be used, ethanol alcohol is the only consumable alcohol approved for human consumption and provides the safest, highest-purity extractions. Isopropyl alcohol may also extract cannabis oil but can contain impurities and toxins at high levels. Denatured alcohol is designed to be foul-tasting to prevent drinking and should never be used for cannabis extractions. When creating cannabis extractions using ethanol alcohol, food-grade 190 proof or higher is recommended to maximize potency and purity. One simple method is to soak cannabis plant material in ethanol alcohol for weeks to produce tinctures. Cannabinoids dissolve into the alcohol, which can then be consumed orally in small amounts. Alcohol pulls out beneficial compounds like THC, CBD, and terpenes, but also chlorophyll pigments, resulting in a dark green color. Ethanol and all forms of alcohol are highly flammable and must be handled with care. The alcohol can also be evaporated off entirely to produce thick, concentrated FECO (full extract cannabis oil).
