Baptizing is the practice of moistening a joint, blunt, or other rolled cannabis product with saliva prior to lighting it, supposedly to help it burn slower. The term is derived from the religious practice of baptism, but uses spit instead of holy water. It involves licking along the length of the joint before smoking. Many find it unappealing and reserve it for when smoking alone or with very close friends. There's no definitive scientific proof that baptizing extends the burn time or makes joints last longer. Too much moisture can actually clog the joint and make it harder to smoke. Commercially available prerolled joints from dispensaries are not baptized. While some argue baptizing helps, others see it as unnecessary. Ultimately it remains a personal preference that shouldn't be forced on other smokers.
