Cannabinoids are the medically active chemical compounds uniquely found in cannabis that exert complex effects throughout the body by interacting with cell receptors that comprise the endocannabinoid system. The two most prevalent and well-understood cannabinoids are THC, the primary psychoactive compound responsible for providing cannabis’ signature euphoric high, and CBD, the non-intoxicating but medically beneficial cannabinoid. However, over 100 documented different cannabinoids exist within the cannabis plant, each with their own distinctive properties and effects when isolated. The human body also produces its own endogenous cannabinoids or endocannabinoids that get synthesized on demand to bind cell receptors and regulate communication between cells, helping maintain optimal homeostasis. While research into the far-reaching potential of various cannabinoids remains ongoing, they already demonstrate compelling value as a supplement supporting the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, whether consumed directly from cannabis or endogenously produced.
