Carding

Carding refers to the process of checking a customer’s photo ID upon entering a cannabis store and again at checkout in Canada. Similar to getting carded at a bar, patrons must show valid government-issued ID proving they are at least 19 years of age (or 18 in Alberta) to purchase cannabis products.

Federal and provincial laws require licensed cannabis stores to check every customer’s ID to prevent underage sales. While it can feel inconvenient, carding helps cannabis businesses avoid penalties and continue providing legal access. Presenting ID immediately upon entry saves checkout time.

Store staff can scan IDs or manually inspect details like the photo, birthdate, holograms, and other security features to verify legitimacy and age. Allowing sufficient time for careful carding keeps things moving smoothly. Staff are trained to detect fake IDs and may confiscate them.

Overall, carding promotes public health and safety by keeping cannabis away from underage youth, as mandated by Health Canada. Most patrons accept carding as routine protocol, much like getting carded for alcohol purchases. With legalized cannabis still in its infancy in Canada, rigorous carding ensures the industry gains public trust through preventing youth access.
