Cotyledon leaves

Cotyledons are the small embryonic first leaves that initially emerge when a cannabis seed successfully sprouts and begins to grow. Cotyledons are roundish, smooth-edged, and typically grow in pairs opposite each other. They serve a vital role in photosynthesis and energy production for the seedling. However, cotyledons naturally senesce and fall off as the plant matures and large serrated fan leaves take over light absorption.

When cannabis seeds have been properly germinated, two small round cotyledons will unfold outward from the growing tip after shedding the protective seed shell. Despite their tiny size, these primordial starter leaves play an important function early on, converting light energy into chemical energy via photosynthesis to feed the young seedling.

Cotyledons should never be removed by force since the plant remains fragile and vulnerable at this early stage. As more expansive fan leaves grow and develop, the limited cotyledons will eventually yellow, wither, and fall away naturally, having completed their role once sufficient larger leaves take over the heavy load of photosynthesis.
