Dry sift, also called kief or dry sieve hash, is a solventless cannabis concentrate made by sifting plant material through screens to separate and collect trichomes. It’s one of the oldest and simplest extraction methods. Dry sifting requires no chemicals or water, just physical filtration. “After harvesting and trimming, I always sift my trim over mesh screens to collect kief for pressing into hash.” Dry sifting uses stacked screens with different sized holes to filter trichomes from plant material. The material is agitated over the screens, allowing trichomes to fall through while plant matter stays behind. Multiple screens refine the extract further. Growers often position screens under plants during trimming to catch fallen trichomes that would otherwise be wasted. The collected kief can be pressed into blocks or used as-is by sprinkling on bowls or joints. When done carefully, dry sifting preserves terpenes well.
