Isopulegol

Close-up of eucalyptus leaves with varying green shades and natural matte textures.

Isopulegol is a minty, cooling terpene found in cannabis, eucalyptus, citrus, lemongrass, and other plants. Its odor resembles that of menthol with similar icy-hot qualities. Research indicates isopulegol has promising therapeutic potential as an antidepressant, anti-anxiety agent, anticonvulsant for seizures, and gastroprotective compounds, although more studies are needed. This fresh, bright smelling compound appears in very small concentrations in a handful of cannabis strains like Kosher Tangie, Harlequin, Headband, Jack Herer and Charoltte’s Web. Isopulegol’s minty zing serves to enhance and round out their citrus-forward floral aromas. Even in minimal amounts, it makes an impact with its distinct icy-cooling effect. While not nearly as prevalent as major players like myrcene or limonene, isopulegol’s influence and interaction with other terpenes could be far greater than its relatively low levels suggest. Science still seeks to unlock the secrets of these lesser terpenes and their intricate molecular dance with others in the cannabis plant.
