In the cannabis extraction process, a nug run refers to using only the dried flower buds as starting material for butane hash oil (BHO), as opposed to also including trim leaves or stems. Because nug runs exclude plant components lower in cannabinoids and terpenes, the resulting concentrate is considered top shelf, highest quality.
However, nug runs are also far more expensive to produce compared to runs that utilize leftover trim material to increase yield. Smaller buds that are not ideal for selling as flower outright due to size, density or aesthetic issues often provide prime candidates for nug run processing.
For the highest quality, professionally produced hash oil, a nug run using trimmed whole flowers as starting material remains the gold standard. Trim runs have their place for production volume, but nug runs capture the true essence of a strain's flavor, aroma, and potency.
