Propane hash oil (PHO) refers to a cannabis extract made using propane as the solvent instead of butane, which is more commonly used. Like butane hash oil (BHO), propane strips and concentrates the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids from plant material into an oily, dabbable extract.
PHO tends to result in extracts with budder-like, whipped consistencies compared to shatters. While more expensive, propane is believed to potentially result in higher terpene retention compared to butane. However, all hydrocarbon extraction is considered dangerous and should only be done by licensed professionals using closed loop systems.
Small batches meticulously crafted from top quality starting material can produce exquisite propane extracts. However, the long term health impacts of dabbing any hydrocarbons necessitate more research. Solventless concentrates provide peace of mind to the ultra-cautious.
