Seed

Cannabis seeds contain the genetic blueprint passed down to offspring plants. Regular cannabis seeds can emerge as male, female or hermaphrodite plants. Feminized seeds are bred to eliminate male chromosomes, guaranteeing female plants for budding. Autoflowering seeds automatically switch into flowering based on age and contain ruderalis crossbreeding. To propagate new plants, seeds are sprouted by planting in soil and providing warmth until they germinate and push through the surface. Even seeds from the same plant vary subtly in their genetic expression and will manifest slightly different phenotype traits and cannabinoid levels once grown. This natural variation allows breeders to engage in “pheno-hunting” whereby they germinate multiple seeds and select the most promising female plant displaying the optimum desired characteristics. Clones are then generated from this pheno mother plant for large-scale cultivation. For home growers, seeds provide the benefit of growing new strains each cycle with different effects, aromas and properties compared to relying on clones.
