Cherried

Glowing coal held by tongs above a hookah bowl with rising smoke.

When a pipe bowl or joint of cannabis continues smoldering and smoking without needing to re-light between puffs, it is said to be cherried. The slowly burning ember resembles a bright red hot cherry, leading to the descriptive cannabis term. Letting a bowl remain cherried provides hands-free, continuous smoking. Many smokers actually prefer keeping bowls cherried for convenience and enabling bigger hits without needing to constantly relight. However some argue this wastes unused cannabis by allowing it to slowly burn away between drags. For conservation, they extinguish bowls completely between puffs by gently tamping or sucking the flame out. The choice between cherrying and extinguishing depends on personal preference. Glass screen bowls better maintain an even cherry. But leaving it cherried too long risks carbonizing flower. Overall, continuous cherried hits provide laid back enjoyment while fully extinguishing conserves green.
